Fotógrafo. Nació franco-estadounidense, de padre francés y madre estadounidense. Aunque inicialmente estudió Zoología, descubrió su verdadera vocación en la fotografía. Hizo estudios de la especialidad en la Universidad de Florida, donde, en 1979, obtuvo el Master of Fine Arts y de la cual fue catedrático. Estableció el estudio fotográfico The Personal Image entre 1980 y 1983.

Había llegado por primera vez a Guatemala en 1975 hasta 1977, y en esa época vivió en San Juan Sacatepequez, cuando comenzó a recorrerlo y conocerlo a profundidad. Se establecería definitivamente en este país en 1983, en Antigua Guatemala. Como fotógrafo ambulante, desde la perspectiva supuesta de un hombre común, retrata en las plazas a quien desee fotografiarse. En 1987, como consecuencia de este trabajo, produce su famosa serie de “Fondo Blanco”. Más de cuatro décadas trabajando en el seno de esas diversas comunidades del país, hacen que su obra refleje la auténtica identidad de estos pueblos.
Desde 1983 dirige su propio estudio: Sombra y Luz, ahora llamado Chez Daniel S. A., donde realiza fotografía de alto nivel. Al mismo tiempo, ha mantenido una actividad constante como profesor de manera que muchos de los fotógrafos de la generación actual guatemalteca han recibido su influencia.

Chauche ha expuesto en la mayoría de las galerías y museos más importantes de Guatemala. Entre sus exhibiciones personales destacan: Ayer y Hoy, antiguo Convento de la Compañía de Jesús, Centro de Formación de la Cooperación Española (feb, 2007); y Santería Chapina y Ser un Hombre Chapín, en la galería Sol del Río (2004). Otra línea en que labora es el ordenamiento de su cuerpo fotográfico en distintas colecciones, para darle una coherencia temática y dotarlo de un sentido testimonial e histórico: agrupó en diferentes series los trabajos realizados en Guatemala desde 1976 y, como resultado, la ha editado hasta la fecha cinco portafolios. Constituyen las primeras ediciones de obras de arte de este tipo en el país.

DANIEL CHAUCHE (United States, September 9, 1951)

Current Status: Artist, Teacher & Owner of the studio “Chez Daniel S.A.”, where he produces photography projects and consults on projects to promote photography in Guatemala.

Photographer. Born French-American to a French father and an American mother, he initially studied Zoology but discovered his true calling in photography. He pursued specialized studies at the University of Florida, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1979 and later became a professor. He established the photography studio The Personal Image between 1980 and 1983. He first arrived in Guatemala in 1975 and lived there until 1977, residing in San Juan Sacatepéquez, where he began to explore and get to know the country in depth. He settled permanently in Guatemala in 1983, in Antigua. As an itinerant photographer, from the supposed perspective of an ordinary man, he photographed anyone who wished to be photographed in the town squares. In 1987, as a result of this work, he produced his famous “White Background” series. More than four decades working within the diverse communities of the country have resulted in his work reflecting the authentic identity of these peoples.

Since 1983, he has run his own studio: Sombra y Luz (Shadow and Light), now called Chez Daniel S.A., where he produces high-level photography. At the same time, he has maintained a constant activity as a teacher, influencing many of the current generation of Guatemalan photographers.

Chauche has exhibited in most of the major galleries and museums in Guatemala. Among his solo exhibitions, notable ones include: Yesterday and Today, at the former Convent of the Society of Jesus, Spanish Cooperation Training Center (February 2007); and Santería Chapina and Being a Chapín Man, at the Sol del Río gallery (2004). Another line of work he pursues is the organization of his photographic body of work into different collections, to give it thematic coherence and endow it with a testimonial and historical meaning: he grouped the works carried out in Guatemala into different series. 1976, and as a result, he has published five portfolios to date. These are the first editions of artworks of this type in the country.
